Local News in Brief : Worker Puts Out Chevron Fire

Share

A small fire that erupted on the roof of a storage tank in the Chevron USA El Segundo Refinery in El Segundo on Thursday morning was put out by an employee using a fire extinguisher, said fire officials.

No one was injured. The fire, which burned for about 30 minutes, is being investigated to determine the cause, said Jeff Trask, a spokesman for the refinery.

The tank where the fire occurred had been out of use for some time. The fire began while employees were preparing the tank for use by filling it with a light crude oil stock and heating the tank to 375 degrees, Trask said.

The El Segundo Fire Department monitored the tank for flare-ups for most of the day.

The fire caused some of the tank’s seams to open. The tank will be drained and examined as part of the investigation, Trask said.
