The World : Two Koreas Open Talks

Share

North and South Korean delegates met today for the first time in more than 2 1/2 years to discuss easing their 40-year rivalry, but they disagreed on the north’s demand to co-host the Summer Olympics. The talks between five lawmakers from each side opened in Panmunjom with Chon Kum Chol, North Korea’s chief delegate, insisting that his country co-host the Games and calling for a nonaggression pact between the two sides, which have no formal ties. But chief South Korean delegate Park Joon Kyu said the only solution was for the north to take part in the Olympics in Seoul, which begin Sept. 17. North Korea has said it will boycott the Games in Seoul.
