President Reagan has agreed to meet in Washington with American Indian leaders who object to remarks he made about Indians during his summit meeting in Moscow, the White House and an American Indian group said today.

The American Indian Action Group, which had announced plans for a protest march on President Reagan’s ranch on Saturday, said White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater contacted group members Thursday afternoon and indicated the President would “make good on his offer to meet with American Indian people.”

During the Moscow summit in May, Reagan told Soviet university students, “Maybe we made a mistake in trying to maintain Indian cultures. Maybe we should not have humored them in wanting to stay in that kind of primitive life style. Maybe we should have said, ‘No, come join us. Be citizens along with the rest of us.’ ”

“The White House staff has been directed to meet with the American Indian Action Group to determine a date and time for the meeting to occur in Washington, D.C.,” the group’s statement said.
