Toyota Starts Work on Engine, Axle Plant in Ky.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Corp. U.S.A. held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday to begin construction of its $300-million engine and axle plant at its $1.1-billion manufacturing complex in Georgetown, Ky.

The 750,000-square-foot Power Train Plant will be built in two phases. The first phase, which involves 4-cylinder engine production and axle assemblies, will begin this month and be completed by 1989.

The second phase, which will manufacture steering assemblies, will be completed by 1990, Toyota said.

The Power Train Plant will employ 500 workers when it reaches full production in 1991. At that time, Toyota cars built at the complex will have a 75% level of domestic content, the car maker said.
