The U.S. Jewish population rose slightly last year to an estimated 5.9 million, representing 2.5% of the population, according to the 1988 Jewish Yearbook recently published in New York.

The biggest gains were reported in the Sun Belt and West Coast areas, with a 50,000 increase in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area and a 30,000 increase in Florida.

Fifteen states reported a drop in the Jewish population. New York--which remains No. 1 with a Jewish population of 1,891,400--had the greatest absolute loss, down 20,000 people.
