John Evans, who says he is the world’s oldest man, celebrated his 111th birthday on Friday by singing on television and attributing his longevity to honey and hot water.

Evans received his 12th annual message of congratulations from Queen Elizabeth II since his 100th birthday. The Guinness Book of World Records sent him a telegram, which hangs on the wall of his Swansea home in Wales.

The former miner appeared on British television, his ruddy face belying his years and gave a rendition of a song in his native Welsh.

Hundreds of cards and flowers have arrived at his home all week but Evans says his favorite gift was a pot of honey.

“There is a lot of good by drinking that because it washes out the stomach and everything,” he said.

Evans, who has a birth certificate to back his claim to be the world’s longest-living man, has another tip: “Don’t take the lift (elevator), climb the stairs.”

Although he has a wheelchair, Evans prefers to use his walking stick when he takes a stroll in the garden.

Now in his 38th year of retirement, he does not drink or smoke but admits to having a healthy appetite.

“Not too much meat but plenty of vegetables,” he said.

Three years ago Evans made medical history by becoming the oldest person to be fitted with a pacemaker.

“It’s made my breathing better and given me a new life. And they told me the battery lasts for 10 years,” he joked.
