About 3,000 demonstrators in Rangoon demanded the ouster of Burma’s ruling party and an end to one-party rule. There was no government attempt to interfere with the demonstrations, the first since the announcement Friday that Atty. Gen. Maung Maung, 63, had been elected by the Burma Socialist Program Party to head the government and party. Several Rangoon residents said they were disappointed that Maung Maung’s election was not accompanied by concrete political changes to accommodate demands for a multi-party democracy and free elections. Maung Maung succeeded President Sein Lwin, who resigned Aug. 12.
