The nation’s wildfire control center asked the Army to provide troops to help suppress fires in the western United States, where nearly 13,000 firefighters are already on the lines. The Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Ida., requested the military assistance to provide relief for civilian firefighters and to release expert firefighters to deal with more complex situations. Meanwhile, military helicopters headed to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming to help battle huge forest fires, and fire crews in Montana made progress on dozens of fires.
