The 18 foreign hostages held in Lebanon will be freed soon, a leading Beirut newspaper said. “Western diplomatic sources in Beirut said the countdown for the release of the foreign hostages has started,” the daily As Safir said. “Terry Waite will be the first to be released in the operation.” Waite, 48, hostage negotiator and special envoy of Archbishop of Canterbury Robert A. K. Runcie, disappeared Jan. 20, 1987, in Muslim West Beirut while meeting with pro-Iranian kidnapers of U.S. hostages.
