County to Collect Hazardous Waste at Landfill Today

Share

The first in a series of Los Angeles County-sponsored household hazardous waste roundups will be held today at the Calabasas Landfill in Agoura.

Residents can drop off free of charge such wastes as aerosol cans, pesticides, motor oil, paint thinner and pool-cleaning chemicals between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. There is a 5-gallon-per-car limit.

Workers for the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts will take the wastes to the Casmalia landfill northwest of Santa Barbara or the Kettleman Hills dump northwest of Bakersfield, said Kieran Bergin, manager of the county program.

Disposing of household toxic wastes with regular trash is illegal, and hiring a private trash hauler to take it away can be costly.

The Calabasas landfill collection will mark the first of five household waste roundups in the county’s pilot program this year. The other collection days will be Sept. 18 at the Puente Hills landfill near Whittier, Oct. 8 at the closed Palos Verdes landfill near Rolling Hills Estates, Oct. 30 at the South Gate Transfer Station and Nov. 20 at the Spadra landfill near Pomona.

Agoura Hills city officials had lobbied the county for more than a year to hold a toxic waste roundup at the Calabasas landfill, said Felicity Kidd, assistant to the city manager.

The roundups will not accept ammunition, explosives, radioactive material or paint, the most common household waste.
