Twenty-one people were hurt in a bomb blitz and rioting in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic in what police said were outlawed Irish Republican Army protests against the extradition of one of its members. The violence broke out when Robert Russell, 30, was extradited from the Irish Republic to Northern Ireland. Twelve protesters and three police officers were hurt in clashes in the Irish Republic, police said. In Northern Ireland, three civilians, two members of the security forces and a suspected IRA gunman were hurt in bomb explosions and gun battles in Belfast, Londonderry and at the border with the republic, police said. Russell was serving 20 years for the attempted murder of a police official when he escaped from prison in Northern Ireland in 1983.
