Reagan’s Legacy

The article “Reagan Era: What Will History Say?” (Part I, Aug. 21) sickened me. It took all my strength to get through it. Your political analyst William Schneider is truly an ignoramus and that’s being polite. “Reagan the innocent” the article should’ve been called. I wanted to write a serious and thoughtful letter to the editor, but I’m too disgusted to try to hide my emotions in this case.

The deficit President Reagan created will be our undoing. Schneider’s theory that Reagan froze federal spending through a huge deficit is truly sad and hard to believe. Warped thinking I’d say.

And the idea that he gave us an image of strength in the world is naive/ignorant. The world, particularly the third world, has all the more reason to be anti-American because of his militaristic stance of cold-hearted intolerance and propaganda.

Reagan portrayed as a “strong leader” is also ignorant of the facts. Iran-Contra proves that, not to mention other instances of his repeatedly proven mistakes, offensive remarks and general rearranging of facts. It’s a sad comment on the U.S. public that Iran-Contra did not greatly affect Reagan’s or the government’s image. I’m a young idealist who tries not to be overly embittered by cynicism, but it’s difficult when blatantly biased articles such as this are served up as a balanced diet to a malnourished public. If the Democrats do get in they’ll be blamed for the disastrous legacy left by the Reagan era.
