Atlanta-based Southern Co.’s Georgia Power Co. unit is under investigation by the Internal Revenue Service and by a federal grand jury for alleged violations of federal tax laws. A Georgia Power spokesman confirmed that IRS agents had searched company offices and interviewed the company’s vice president and comptroller. He said several officers, whom he did not identify, have been issued subpoenas.
