In an effort to reduce the number of drunk-driving fatalities during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will be holding its second annual “Drive for Life” campaign Saturday.

The program, which is also supported by Volkswagen of America, seeks people who will pledge not to drink and drive on the Saturday before Labor Day, traditionally a day with a disproportionately high number of drunk-driving fatalities.

Last year, such efforts helped reduce the Saturday drunk-driving deaths by 27.5%, a MADD spokeswoman claimed.

Drive for Life is intended to arouse a heightened sense of community responsibility, and to discourage would-be drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel. In a radio advertisement, MADD asks drivers to turn on their headlights Saturday as a show of support for the campaign.
