A Soviet-Afghan crew is scheduled to blast off today from the Soviet Union’s Baikonur Cosmodrome. The three-man crew will join up with Soviet cosmonauts aboard the Mir space station who will end a record-breaking year in space in December, Soviet space officials said. They said veteran Soviet space traveler Col. Vladimir Lyakov, Afghan pilot Abdul Ahad Mohammed and Soviet physician Valery Palyakov are scheduled to rendezvous with Mir to join the crew of Vladimir Titov and Musa Manarov. Lyakov and Mohammed will return to Earth after eight days, but Palyakov will remain with the Mir cosmonauts to observe their final months in space.
