Greek Foreign Minister Karolos Papoulias flew to Nicosia on Sunday to discuss the forthcoming peace negotiations between Greek and Turkish Cypriots on the future of their divided island.

The Cypriot leadership is expected to brief Papoulias on last week’s meeting in Geneva between Cyprus President George Vassiliou and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

After their meeting, Vassiliou and Denktash announced that formal peace negotiations on the future of Cyprus will begin Sept. 15 in Nicosia. They said they hope to have a negotiated settlement to end the 14-year division of Cyprus by June 1, 1989.
