Nierlich of Austria Wins Giant Slalom

THREDBO, Australia — Rudolf Nierlich of Austria skied superbly over both runs Sunday to win the Australian Bicentennial Cup giant slalom on the Crackenback trail at Thredbo.
Nierlich, 22, the former world junior champion, was clocked in 54.93 seconds and 54.82 over the 39-gate course for a combined time of 1:49.75.
Ole Furuseth of Norway was second in 1:51.11, and Tiger Shaw of the United States was third in 1:51.97. Felix McGrath of the United States was fourth in 1:52.33.
