The World : Nicaragua Extends Truce
President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua extended a cease-fire with the Contras for another month and called on the U.S.-backed guerrillas to lay down their arms. In a speech to Latin American legislators meeting in Managua, Ortega also accused the United States of trying to block regional peace efforts and said that Nicaragua’s war will continue until the White House changes its policy. An informal truce in the fighting has been in effect since late March, and Ortega’s action extends it, from the government’s side, to Sept. 30.
