Kimball Pleads Not Guilty at Arraignment

Share

Diver Bruce Kimball pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of drunk driving-manslaughter and drunk driving in an accident with serious injury.

Kimball is accused of driving a car, while under the influence of alcohol, into a group of teen-agers and killing two of them Aug. 1.

Judge Harry Coe suspended Kimball’s driving privileges but stopped short of imposing travel restrictions on the former Olympic diver. Coe allowed Kimball to remain free on $10,000 bond and said he was satisfied that Kimball posed no risk of flight.

Coe set a tentative trial date of Nov. 14.

Kimball was present for the arraignment but said nothing as attorney Frank Quesada entered the plea. If convicted on all five of the counts on which he is charged, Kimball faces up to 45 years in prison.

Kimball, who finished second in the Olympic platform diving competition four years ago, was a favorite to make the 1988 U.S. team before the accident. He went ahead with plans to compete at the Olympic trials in Indianapolis earlier this month but did not qualify for the squad.
