The Army, prompted by the governor of Utah, announced it was extending into October the public comment deadline on a draft environmental impact study covering its biological warfare research program. Lt. Col. John Chapla, an Army spokesman, said Utah Gov. Norman H. Bangerter had requested a public hearing be held in his state “and we saw no reason not to accommodate him.” As a result, the deadline for public comment has been extended to Oct. 4 and a public hearing has been scheduled at the Tooele Army Depot in Utah on Sept. 19, Chapla said. The draft impact study analyses biological warfare research work at facilities around the country, including Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah.
