In Michigan and Pennsylvania, the first teachers’ strikes of the school year extended vacations for more than 6,500 youngsters. There were no classes for 1,893 students in Stockbridge, Mich., following a walkout by three unions representing about 250 teachers and support workers. In the Mechanicsburg and Moshannan Valley school districts in Pennsylvania, teacher strikes kept 4,700 students out of classes.
