Zenith Electronics Corp., the last U.S.-owned television manufacturer, Thursday proposed a standard for futuristic television it said will deliver the full promise of the technology.

Zenith engineers submitted their proposal to the Federal Communications Commission’s advisory committee on advanced television services. The action came Thursday as the FCC took several steps to allow work on high-definition television to proceed.

Zenith said its proposal meets all the criteria laid out by the FCC. In particular, it will not spoil the signal received by people who stick with their current models of televisions.

About 20 proposed standards have been submitted to the FCC, but Zenith said its proposal is the best because it is less susceptible to problems.
