Ban Firing at Will
The recent Times articles on employment at will clearly detail the issue, but they should give more attention to the potential consequences when an employer asserts a right to fire any employee without cause.
If employment at will becomes an accepted practice, job security will be provided only as a collective right through union contracts. Non-union employees will thus be thrust into unions by employers who insist on upholding employment at will.
Rather than strengthening an employer’s control over the work force, employment at will actually strengthens the unions. Then, instead of dealing with individually weak employees, the employers will have to deal with collectively strong unions. Employers: Is this what you want?
