Local News in Brief : Only 2 Drivers Caught at Sobriety Checkpoint
The Simi Valley Police Department stopped 1,192 drivers during a sobriety check that began Saturday night and ended Sunday morning, but only two people were arrested on charges of drunk driving.
Sgt. Neal Rein said the outcome was the sparsest since the department began running occasional checkpoints two years ago. “It must be that everybody’s out of town,” he said.
However, Rein emphasized that the checkpoint’s purpose is to make inebriated people think again before driving, not to catch those who decide to drive anyway.
The checkpoint was set up on Erringer Road between Los Angeles Avenue and Cochran Street from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Of the 1,192 drivers stopped, Rein said 23 were given additional tests to determine whether they were drunk.
The two men arrested both are Simi Valley residents, he said.
