Daniela Costain of Romania, who had the longest discus throw of the year at one point, has been granted asylum in Turkey and is seeking to emigrate to Australia, officials said.
A spokesman for the immigration department said the request was being considered and that Costain could be allowed to enter Australia under a special category for “people with something to offer.”
Costain, 23, was ranked No. 1 in the world after throwing the discus 243 feet 6 inches. The world record of 253-4 was set in July by Gabriela Reinsch of East Germany.
