Elton John’s vast collection of personal memorabilia and art went under the gavel in London on Tuesday: outrageous glasses, stage costumes, boots and all. A huge pair of fiberglass boots which the flamboyant British singer wore when he played the “Pinball Wizard” in the rock opera “Tommy” were the highlight of Tuesday’s auction. In some of the day’s swiftest bidding, English shoe manufacturer Stephen Griggs bought the 54-inch high boots for $18,700. Some 2,000 of Elton John’s cast-offs are being sold at Sotheby’s auction house until the end of the week. “Today is the silly sale, we don’t expect it to be the big money one. But its a chance for some of Elton’s fans to buy something relatively cheaply,” a Sotheby’s spokeswoman said. Example: A pair of glasses, with blue and yellow tinted lenses, mother of pearl frames and rhinestone embellished wire extensions, sold for $5,440.
