One day after talks were broken off, the Greek government announced that a new round of negotiations with the United States over the future of American bases in the country will begin in October. U.S. negotiators suspended the ninth round of talks Monday and returned to Washington for consultations after Greek officials formally notified them that the U.S. Hellenikon air base in Athens must close. The present 1983 bases agreement will expire in December, and talks began last November on a new pact covering the four major U.S. bases and 20 smaller installations in the country.
