A British air force jet fighter crashed Wednesday, killing the pilot, police said. His American co-pilot ejected and was slightly injured.

Police in the town of Calw, about 20 miles southeast of Stuttgart, said the plane crashed at about 11 a.m. in an open field.

They said that the Royal Air Force Jaguar hit a high-voltage line just before it crashed, but that it could not be determined if that was the cause of the accident.

Officials declined to release the names of the crew pending notification of relatives.
