West Hollywood : Rent Assistance Considered
The City Council is studying a proposed emergency assistance program to help tenants faced with eviction because they are unable to pay the rent.
The program would make an average of $750 available each month to 20 West Hollywood residents who, due to the loss of jobs, illness, divorce or other hardship, cannot not pay the rent. The funds would be available for up to three months.
The council will meet Sept. 19 to discuss funding sources for the program. Aid for AIDS, the Red Cross, the Supplemental Security Income Program and the Jewish Free Loan Assn. are being considered as sources.
The council also revised a rent stabilization rule to allow a single tenant to file an application for a rent decrease if the landlord fails to perform required maintenance. Previously, a rent decrease application had to be signed by more than 50% of the tenants in the occupied units.
