Torrential rains that soaked Mexico this week flooded a museum and damaged thousands of valuable artworks, but restoration experts say they can salvage the paintings by Picasso, Goya and other artists. Restoration experts working at the Carilo Gil Museum in Mexico City said Wednesday it would take at least two weeks to clean stains and dried mud from the artwork, some of it worth as much as $100,000. “When I was called in and first looked around here, I just sat down and began to cry,” restoration specialist Cristina Hernandez said. Heavy rains and a poor drainage system caused nearly 4 feet of water to flood the basement Monday of the museum in the colonial San Angel district, where more than 4,000 works of art were being stored for future exhibits.
