The State : S.F. All-Male Bastion Falls

The prestigious all-male University Club of San Francisco, yielding to growing pressure, has decided to end a nearly century-old tradition and admit women. Members voted nearly 4 to 1 in favor of allowing women members. Ignazio Ruvolo, club president, promised to move with “unwavering intent” to end the 98-year-old policy limiting membership to men. The private club on Nob Hill was established as “an association of gentlemen” who had graduated from college. Barring any hitches, the first woman may be nominated for membership this month and be inducted into the club by Thanksgiving. Members voted against allowing women last January but gave in because of mounting pressure by the city attorney, state attorney general and the Legislature to end discrimination in private clubs.
