The cost of Yonkers, N.Y.’s defiance of a federal judge doubled to more than $1.6 million when the City Council met but did not vote on a housing desegregation plan. The city incurred a fine of $819,200 Thursday for not ending its opposition to a desegregation order. The fines, which now total $1,638,300, started at $100 and doubled each day U.S. District Judge Leonard B. Sand’s order was in effect. If the contempt does not end today, the fines will reach $1 million a day, the cap set by an appeals court. Mayor Nicholas Wasicsko scheduled a council meeting for noon today for a vote on the housing plan.
