A yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of St. Catherine’s Military School will be launched Sunday with an outdoor Mass at 9 a.m. on the school grounds, 215 N. Harbor Blvd. An open house will follow.
“Essentially, our mission has not changed in the 100 years since the founding of St. Catherine’s,” said Sister Mary Menegatti, principal of the military school since 1985. “Our community has always focused on educating the young and developing the whole person--spiritually, physically and mentally.”
In the spring of 1888, the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose agreed to build a parish school for St. Boniface Church in Anaheim. The sisters purchased three acres of land next to the church and built a brick schoolhouse, which was dedicated on March 19, 1889.
The parish school became a military institution in 1925. This school year, St. Catherine’s has about 215 students in grades two through eight. About half of the students live on campus.
