Six gunmen killed a British executive in an ambush on Mindanao Island, Philippine police said. John Tree, 56, vice president of the Philippine Cocoa Estate Corp., a Malaysian-Filipino firm, was aboard a service vehicle headed for a cocoa plantation when the men, armed with submachine guns, opened fire Saturday. Tree died at the scene, police said, while his Filipino driver suffered only slight injuries. Communist rebels near Davao City on Mindanao have threatened attacks on American interests, but no such warning has been issued to British businesses and personnel.
