Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, 56, leader of the New Cinema movement and one of Brazil’s top directors, best known for “Macunaima.” In the mid-60s, Andrade and other young Brazilian directors, including Glauber Rocha, Roberto Farias and Paulo Cesar Saraceni, founded the Cinema Novo movement, a turn away from traditional Hollywood films toward a frank depiction of the country’s sociological and political problems.
