U.N.-sponsored peace talks between Iran and Iraq, stalled since they started almost three weeks ago in Geneva, recessed and will move temporarily to New York. Mediator Jan Eliasson of Sweden said both sides accepted an invitation by Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar to continue direct talks “soon” at U.N. headquarters. Eliasson conceded at a news conference that “on issues of substance, there has been little if any progress,” but said that both Iran and Iraq “seem committed to keep the peace process going.” He confirmed that both sides will continue to observe a cease-fire that went into effect Aug. 20.
