Council Gives Final Approval to Build 22-Story Office Tower

Construction on one of the two tallest office structures to be built in downtown Glendale is to begin Friday following unanimous approval of the project this week by the City Council.

The council, which also acts as the Redevelopment Agency, Tuesday signed final agreements permitting construction of a 22-story office tower at 500 N. Brand Blvd., the northeast corner of Brand and Milford Street. Developers are the Howard-Platz Group in partnership with LP and Dunn-Glendale Properties.

Construction of another 22-story office building is also scheduled to begin this year. Lincoln Property Co. of Texas plans to build corporate headquarters for the Carnation Co. on a two-block site on Brand north of the Ventura Freeway. That site is bordered by Brand, Monterey Road, Louise Street and the Verdugo Wash.

Both projects are expected to be completed in two years, said Susan Shick, deputy redevelopment director.

In an effort to minimize disruption of traffic resulting from heavy equipment in the downtown area, no other major new projects will be permitted to start there until next summer, Shick said.

The Howard-Platz Group also plans to build an office project at 500 N. Central Ave., but has agreed to hold off on that development until after July 15, Shick said.
