‘India Fights History, Poverty’
Tad Szulc’s column “India Fights History and Poverty to Give Children a Living Chance” (Opinion Sept. 4) was an inspiring lesson not just of the daily devastation of persistent hunger and disease, but what is being done and can be done to alleviate this misery.
Often, we are overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem of world poverty, but here are clear examples of how easily life after life can be saved through simple health measures. Oral rehydration therapy, immunizations, the education of women, clean drinking water and birth spacing are just some of the low-cost measures for saving literally thousands of lives on a daily basis.
In the next couple of months, Congress will be debating and voting on legislation that supports these programs in India and all over the world. Letting Congress know that we support these inexpensive and effective solutions will help focus the government’s energy and resources on what’s working.
