Tunisian Sentenced to Death in Absentia Reportedly Returns
Hamadi Jebali, a Tunisian Muslim leader sentenced to death in absentia last year for plotting to overthrow the government, has returned to Tunis after more than a year in exile, his friends said Wednesday.
Jebali, whose face appeared on wanted posters all over Tunisia after a spate of hotel bombings in August, 1987, flew in from Spain and was met at the airport by his lawyer, fellow Muslim leader Rashid Ghannouchi and members of his family.
The 39-year-old engineer was implicated in the bomb attacks, which injured 12 British and Italian vacationers in the southern resort towns of Sousse and Monastir last Aug. 2.
