Opponents asked an appeals court to delay the proposed partial merger of two Detroit newspapers--the Free Press and News--until the courts can hold a full hearing on the issue. The appeal sought “an expedited motion to be considered that would stay the (agreement) until this whole court of appeals can review the legal questions we have presented,” said John Kelly, a Michigan state senator from Detroit. Kelly has led the effort by newspaper readers and advertisers to block the merger.
