Hundreds of Iraqi Kurdish guerrillas left Turkey for Iran in two convoys, vowing to continue the fight from there against the Iraqi army. “We go to Iran because from there we can reach Iraq to fight,” rebel Marivan Alameir said, shortly before heading for Iran with more than 1,000 other refugees. They left aboard 27 Turkish-hired trucks from a temporary refugee camp near Yuksekov, a remote town in southeastern Turkey, for the 30-mile drive to the craggy peaks of northwestern Iran. A general amnesty for Kurds announced by the Baghdad regime Sept. 6 is little trusted by most of the 60,000 who fled to Turkey.
