U.S. Lebanon Envoy Has Stroke
U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon John Kelly suffered a stroke today and was taken by military helicopter to a hospital in Cyprus, where his condition was reported stable, a U.S. Embassy spokeswoman said.
She said that Kelly’s stroke was not serious, but that the 49-year-old diplomat needed treatment outside Lebanon and will be transferred from Cyprus to West Germany or the United States. Kelly has been posted in Lebanon for two years. In July, his motorcade came under fire in Christian East Beirut but the incident was not deliberate, embassy sources said.
