Chinese filmgoers don’t feel the Oscar-winning film “The Last Emperor” is terribly realistic, though many are enthusiastic about the film’s technical merits. But the big realism flaw? The screen emperor’s nose is too big. The New China News Agency quoted viewers as saying Chinese-American actor John Lone’s nose was too big for the part of emperor Pu Yi in the movie. “Big nose” is a common Chinese nickname for foreigners. The emperor’s brother, Pu Jie, 81, has said a current Chinese television series on Pu Yi’s life was more realistic than the film but that Bernardo Bertolucci’s epic is “well produced technically,” the agency said on Friday.
