The 35,338-ton Iraqi tanker Ain Zalah, testing Iraq’s claim to freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf, has sailed through the Strait of Hormuz without interference by Iran, Western military sources said. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has said the war might resume if Iran interferes with Iraqi shipping. Iran maintains it has the right under international law to search Iraqi ships for war materiel. The issue has been a factor in stalling peace talks, due to resume in New York on Thursday. The military sources said Iraqi ships have made at least four voyages out of the gulf and at least three into it since the Aug. 20 cease-fire.
