Two masked men fired shotguns at the car of a senior aide of West German Finance Minister Gerhard Stoltenberg this morning but the official was unharmed, police said.

Stoltenberg said the attack on State Secretary Hans Tietmeyer, 57, apparently was connected with left-wing opposition to next week’s West Berlin meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Security officials thought the Red Army Faction, a left-wing German terrorist group, might have been behind the attack.

Tietmeyer was driving to work in his official automobile about 8:30 a.m. when two masked men fired shotguns at the car about 50 yards from the official’s home in the Bonn suburb of Bad Godesberg, police said.

The shots came from nearby woods and struck the driver’s side of the car and one tire, police said. Authorities began hunting for suspects but no arrests were reported and no one claimed immediate responsibility.

Stoltenberg told reporters Tietmeyer has worked for months on preparations for the Sept. 27-29 conference, which left-wing groups have denounced as a meeting to plunder the Third World and oppress the poor.
