The number of confirmed dead in a flash flood in Monterrey, Mexico, caused by Hurricane Gilbert rose to 140, local officials said. “We have recovered 140 cadavers. It’s difficult to say how many more there could be. . . , “said Daniel Dimas, assistant information director for the Nuevo Leon state government. Dimas said that most of the bodies were being found in the Santa Catarina River, about 20 miles downstream from Monterrey. Dimas said ranches in the mountain area around Monterrey and a village of about 100 families remained cut off by floods and mudslides. Meanwhile, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that Tropical Storm Helene has formed in the eastern Atlantic. The storm is expected to strengthen as it moves west in the next few days.
