Ethiopia is facing a “flash flood” of refugees from Sudan and Somalia, with more than 750,000 pouring over the borders in recent months, a top U.N. official reported. “The Sudanese and Somali refugees are surging into Ethiopia in an alarming proportion,” said Arthur Dewey, deputy director of the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. “They are coming into Ethiopia as a flash flood and without warning and in a pitiable condition at that,” Dewey told reporters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, after a five-day tour of refugee camps. Dewey appealed for $60 million in aid for those fleeing civil wars in Sudan and Somalia.
