Share

Settlement of a dispute with a Ukrainian group will allow display of the Names Project Quilt, an 8-acre memorial to those dead of AIDS, on the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., the weekend of Oct. 7-9, it was announced in San Francisco. The quilt bears the names of thousands of victims of the fatal disease. The permit for its display on the land between the White House and the National Monument had been held up since the U.S. Park Service realized the area already had been booked by the Ukrainian National Millennium Committee to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Christianity in their homeland. After several days of meetings in Washington, the Ukrainian group decided to select another site at the National Monument, said Michael Smith, Names Project general manager.
