Nine Hurt as Engine Explodes on Pan Am Airliner Over N. Y.
One of four engines on a Pan American World Airways commuter plane exploded during a flight from New York City, sending glass, metal fragments and smoke into the passenger compartment and injuring nine people, officials said.
Flight 878, a Canadian-built De Havilland 7 turboprop with 16 people aboard, landed safely Wednesday night at Albany County Airport. The explosion occurred at an altitude of 5,000 feet as the pilot was preparing to land.
Four passengers suffered cuts, burns and bruises from shards of glass and hot metal fragments, a Pan Am spokeswoman said.
