One of four engines on a Pan American World Airways commuter plane exploded during a flight from New York City, sending glass, metal fragments and smoke into the passenger compartment and injuring nine people, officials said.

Flight 878, a Canadian-built DeHavilland 7 turboprop with 16 people aboard, landed safely Wednesday night at Albany County Airport.

Four passengers suffered cuts, burns and bruises from shards of glass and hot metal fragments, a Pan Am spokeswoman said.
